Shutterstocks success is mainly due to its subscription based service. This means that you get a lot of downloads with relatively small income per image. This is by far the easiest site for accumulating revenue, and getting sales, and currently my favourite site.
Istock is going through a bit of turmoil at the moment as they are changing the royalty structure. It will leave many out of pocket. For me sales are not significant enough to worry about, sales are not as frequent as shutterstock, but it makes up for this with decent rates.
A bit of a hit and miss at times, Dreamstime seems to go through periods of many sales followed by nothing for weeks. Rates vary between Shutterstock and Istock, but its still worth adding a portfolio as an extra source of income.

Stock photography has been around for about a decade. Thanks to the creation of the web, photographers of varying skills have been able to upload their work online, creating vast galleries of useful and varying images which are now used for a variety of purposes. Also known as microstock, it has opened the door to many of us that would never had the chance of having our pictures on show, let alone bought and used by websites, magazine, advertising companies etc. Now in my second year (part-time) I owe a lot to the forums and people of Istockphoto, who have helped me find my feet, as well as point out the error of my ways early on, and taught me how to use my camera in a way I never thought possible. If you have a passion for photography and want to earn some residual income, then I highly recommend it.
